WHAT ARE THE SECRETS OF THE FASHION WORLD?
How many times have you heard the phrase “take fashion seriously!”? Especially when you watch some award show where hosts criticize your fashion choice and tell you what to wear. Doesn’t that rub you the wrong way? On the contrary, I always believe that fashion is about free-thinking and not blindly following any rules you see on TV or in magazines. Fashion is about expressing yourself in a manner that fits your personality. So, throw the fashion rule book in the garbage and wear whatever outfits you feel are right for you because, honey, that’s all that matters.
Many years ago, a journalist asked Dr. Albert Schwitzer, a renowned theologian and philosopher who passed away at the age of 90 in 1965, “What is the problem with man today?” The doctor took a few moments and answered, “Man, today, don’t think.” Baffled by this answer, the journalist asked the doctor what he meant by “man don’t think.” The humble doctor replied that people don’t think for themselves; they conform, especially in the fashion world, where people wear what everybody else does. As a result, they rarely act on their instincts or come up with something unique. This is the problem in today’s fashion world: people don’t care. That is why sometimes you must throw the fashion rule book in the dumpster and be the creator and the fashion critic yourself.
One of the fashion trends you should ignore is wearing sneakers only for exercising. Whoever came up with that idea didn’t know anything about fashion. So, instead, wear sneakers on any occasion. Sneakers aren’t only street style and street fashion; they are a way of life. Imagine going to a wedding wearing your best dress, and your feet are killing you. On such an occasion, it’s better to step off the dance floor for one minute, go to your car, put on the most comfortable pair of running shoes, or even try open-toe shoes, and have fun. Fashion is all about comfort.
Not long ago, open-toe shoes were a no-no with pretty much everything, especially tights, mainly because women were very self-conscious about showing their toes. No more. Open-toe shoes are back in fashion. In general, women are very self-conscious about showing off their bodies, especially their breasts. It was a deadly sin to show off your bra in public a while back. Now, many women wear see-through shirts or fishnets just to show their cleavage. Although it’s a little bit of a risqué look, this trend is sexy and fun. Because if you can’t have fun, what’s the point? If you can’t feel sexy, what are you doing in the fashion world?
So you are at your wedding, a woman at the height of her career, powerful, sexy, charming, and you don’t wear high heels because you are 6’2″? Seriously? No matter how tall or short you are, you should wear shoes that complement your figure and, ultimately, your outfit. This is all considering you know how to walk with high heels because there is nothing more embarrassing than stumbling in your 7-inch stilettos and falling on your face in the middle of the dance floor with everybody watching and taking pictures. Just because you trade comfort for fashion doesn’t mean you are less fashionable. Comfort is fashion. Wear comfortable shoes, flats, clear heels, bogs, sneakers, whatever shoes you are into. I never understood why you couldn’t wear sneakers with a formal dress. The world is yours when it comes to fashion; wear whatever you like, girl.
FASHION & GOTH
One of the most moronic fashion trends is wearing red lipstick only in the evening. How about wearing red lipstick every time you feel like it or wearing no lipstick or makeup at all because sometimes natural beauty is transcending. Or go goth! How about that idea? Nothing is more intriguing than wearing a black outfit with some black makeup to top it off. When it comes to fashion, try goth clothing at least once in your lifetime. Of course, you can also lighten your gothic tone by adding a little bit of color to your wardrobe. It is very fashionable and highly cool for goths to add a splash of color to the mix; some orange, navy, even purple, or red, soften up your look because black goes with everything.
When it comes to trendy clothes, pastel goth is in fashion. Pastel goth, also known as creepy cute, revolves around the idea that you should add a touch of sweetness to your gothic outfit, preferably pink hair or any other bright color. You can also add cute girly hairpins, bows, and even wear flowers to your gothic look that will most certainly balance the darkness in your wardrobe. While we are on the topic of hair, try matching your clothes with your hair color. Just as goths wear all black, if you are a redhead, wear red. If you like to dye your hair white, wear white—especially in the winter.
URBAN STYLE
As we talk streetwear style outfits and goth, why not look at some urban clothing? Urban style revolves around shirts, hoodies, sneakers, loose pants, baggy jeans, and comfortable clothes from traditional rap artist fashion. Try wearing denim from top to bottom. People like to match denim jackets with jeans in today’s fashion world. So, wearing denim from top to bottom is back in style. Have you ever thought of wearing urban clothes with goth makeup or mixed gold jewelry with silver to look different than everybody else? And while we talk urban fashion and being unique, let’s talk about vintage clothes.
FASHIONABLE VINTAGE CLOTHING
Vintage fashion was in style from the 40s through the 60s. Colored shirts, pattern shirts, flower dresses, old worn jeans, and jean jackets were the “it” styles. The idea is to mix old clothes with modern outfits. Mix patterns and colors, or if you love a brown vintage jacket, match it with brown clothes. Remember that vintage goes well with jeans, especially denim jackets. If you like vintage outfits, think of matching them with other clothes, and don’t forget to accessorize. Scarves, necklaces, chockers, you name it, and the mother of all—the leather jacket.
Who doesn’t love to match vintage clothes with leather? If you are a woman who can’t find what you are looking for, search for it in the men’s section. Sometimes men’s clothes mixed with feminine pieces give you a unique and fashionable look. Also, on pretty much every occasion, wear a shoulder bag. A long time ago, if you didn’t match your bag with your shoes, it was a deadly sin worth burning in hell for. Now that is not the case. If you choose to wear a shoulder bag or purse, look for a crazy pattern to make a statement.
THE FASHION OF GRUNGE OUTFITS
Since we covered vintage, let’s talk grunge. At the height of the rock and roll era, grunge fashion began to shape with rock bands like Nirvana or AC/DC. Women wore fedora hats, skinny jeans, denim jackets, scarves, and pattern hats. Grunge clothing also included overcoats with black tees and jeans topped off with beanies and scarves. In addition, the grunge style of the 1980s fashion boom incorporated loose sweaters thrown over a white shirt and shorts.
During the 1990s, the grunge style included paint-splattered ripped baggie jeans, leather jackets, and hoods. Short shorts, t-shirts, bolo hats, and long-sleeved checkered shirts wrapped around the waist were the norm for the cool kids hanging around the block. As for the colder days, people wore leather jackets. For a classier look, a white t-shirt, black jeans, and a leather jacket did the trick, with a beanie and combat boots for fall-like weather. Instead of jackets, an oversized linen sweater completed the grunge fashion look.
One of the vices of fashion is wearing leather in the summer. In recent years, designers have come up with leather outfits that will keep you cool in the summer. If you can’t afford genuine leather, try faux leather. A long time ago, wearing brown with black was taboo, but since grunge is all about freedom of expression, give the combination a try. Grunge is about confidence and coolness; it isn’t about spending hundreds on designer clothing but rather being relaxed, classy, and having fun.
PREPPY CLOTHES
The critical aspects of a preppy fashion are the polo shirt, the varsity jackets, the cable knit sweaters, blazers, loafers, and rugby shirts that your average college student wears. Fashionable? Very. But where can you wear such outfits? Pretty much everywhere. Also, fashion has no age; you can be 20 or 70 and still enjoy a football jacket. The problem with society these days is that we label people and fashion. Culture sets the norm, and people blindly follow it. But what if we rise above the norm? What if we wear this preppy style wherever we choose? What happens then? Try it and let me know.
FASHION, BOHEMIAN STYLE
Let’s talk Bohemian or Boho style. Starting with the 1960s fashion, the bohemian trend has inspired a generation to break free from conformity, to be a hippie, a rebel wearing long flowing clothes and simple aesthetics. Think about what gypsy used to wear—baggy comfortable clothing made from fibers, loose colored blouses, caftans, boho shirts, maxi dresses, and pieces with patterns like flower patterns and lace. In addition, Boho clothing encompasses accessories like fabulous colorful scarves, bolo hats, vests, and denim jackets, finishing off with gladiator sandals, leather boots, or moccasins. Boho style is about the 60s, about being a rebel, about being free and without a care in the world. A unique style for a unique personality.
INDIE CLOTHES
Hipsters and independent thinkers created indie clothes and indie style, hence the name. While most people like to shop at high-end stores and malls, hipsters look for clothes at thrift stores and secondhand stores. This type of fashion is tough to define because people who dabble in it follow their unique style and personality. They are the free thinkers who will mix any clothing item they see fit with anything they like. The Indie style incorporates checkered dresses, printed short skirts, black dresses, floral patterns, jumpsuits, printed dresses, crop tops, and everything in between. The idea behind this fashion trend is freedom of expression and imagination. Wearing more than one bold color at a time, sequins during the day, mixed prints, and pretty much whatever you want.
The idea behind fashion is imagination. There are hundreds of styles, thousands of trends, and millions of outfits to choose from. Here in this article, I showed you millions of styles. The only style I didn’t show you was YOUR style, and that’s what fashion is all about—YOU!
